Weekend Update: 11.29.2010

Hi friends!

You know how SNL has a Weekend Update? Well we figured we should do the same and keep you updated about what is going on with all things GLBT on campus. Highlights from this week include Fr. Linnane speaking about Sexual Ethics to Loyola students. Yes, those two words were in the same sentence: Fr. Linnane & sex.  Loyola’s president spoke about the taboo subject of sex. He talked about love and respect and how people should consider these factors before deciding to have sex. Thanks to everyone who came to hear his thoughts!

In other national news, the military’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy, is making headlines once again. This past  Thursday, the Pentagon released a study citing that 70% of servicemen and women think that repealing the policy “would be positive, mixed or of no consequence at all.” Sen. John McCain still showed strong opposition towards measures to repeal DADT. Even the statistics are loving the gays in the military! But apparently McCain isn’t happy with hard statistics from government sources. We’ll have to see how this plays out.

Hope that everyone is enjoying their last precious days of class and preparing for finals!

Gay for Pay?

 

Huffington Post article on New York's Gubernatorial candidate

 

Last night Morgan Meneses-Sheets, director of Equality Maryland mentioned that she wasn’t “gay for pay.”

Interestingly enough, I stumbled across this article about the Republican gubernatorial candidate renting buildings to gay clubs despite his recent comments disapproving of how schools  are “brainwashing” students into thinking being gay was ok. Thoughts?

Denim Day Recap

 

Jeff Kniple made these great buttons for administrators who could not wear denim.

 

Thanks to everyone who supported us by wearing denim yesterday, it was a great success. There were a lot of students wearing denim and administrators wore buttons saying “I support denim day.” Many thanks for Jeff Kniple for making those great buttons and getting them to administrators.

We also had the pleasure of having a wonderful speaker, Dr. Kevin McGann, a Loyola alum, who spoke eloquently about his memories of being gay at Loyola. Equality Maryland‘s Director was in the audience and gave out postcards to be sent to Maryland legislators demanding marriage and employment equality to members of the GLBTQ community. Kudos to Doc LoPresto for getting us a great speaker and to Spectrum for a great event!

Today is Denim Day! Thank you to everyone intentionally wearing denim to show support for sexual minorities in our community. Don’t forget to come to our speaker tonight at 6:30 in Knott Hall B01. Hope to see you there.

Denim Day! October 12th

Did you miss us Loyola? Welcome back! We know we haven’t been so good at updating our blog but we’re now back into the swing of things and we promise to keep you updated about all things GLBTA on campus. Check out the following exciting events on campus that promote diversity on our campus community:

This Monday, October 11, ONE Loyola and a number of departments at Loyola will be sponsoring a forum entitled “There’s More to Me than You See” highlighting the diversity of student experiences on campus. The forum is a response to Fr. Linnane’s initial letter regarding civility and respect for diversity at our university. We hope that you can make  it!

This Tuesday, October 12^th, Loyola will participate in Denim Day, a day on which students are asked to wear some article of denim.  By deliberating choosing to wear denim, we communicate to all members of Loyola’s sexual minority community that there is indeed a place at the table for them here.   In essence, Denim Day helps to create an academic environment of inclusion and tolerance, an environment that moves us closer to our  ideals of unity and respect for all. On this same day, the annual Denim Day Speaker will be held at 6:30pm in Knott Hall B01.

Look out for signup sheets for Loyola’s annual VoiceOUT list. Add your name to the list and show that you support the GLBTA community. The names will be published in the Greyhound and they are a strong testament to the support and care Loyola has for our community.

Lastly, we would like to mention the horrible incident at Rutgers that took the life such a brilliant young man. Tyler Clementi’s death and the recent string of bullying-related suicides affect us all as a community. If you or someone you know is struggling to understand why things like this happen, seek support. Talk to your friends, roommates, RA’s, professors or administrators and of course Spectrum members and officers are here to support you. There are a number of resources that can help you throughout this difficult time. The Counseling Center is also a great place to sit down and talk to someone, visit their website for more info at www.loyola.edu/counselingcenter.

Here is a situation you might find yourself in tomorrow:

Friend: Hey! I see a lot of people wearing that shirt – what does 1-in-10 mean?
You: Well, this statistic means that 1-in-10 (or 10%) of a given population have had a same-sex sexual experience. So since our
campus consists of a little over 3,000 people, there are 300 (or 10%) Loyola students and faculty wearing this T-shirt to visualize this statistic.
Friend: Wow, that’s so interesting…I never knew that…
